Following are reviews for the American Film Institute Film Festival. All screenings are at the Cineplex Odeon Century Plaza Cinemas .
‘In a Shallow Grave’
U.S.A., 1987, 92 minutes , 8 p.m. Fledgling writer-director Kenneth Bowser adapts James Purdy’s 1976 novel as if it were for the stage. The result is a sensitive but languid mood piece about a badly scarred World War II veteran (Michael Biehn), the war widow (Maureen Mueller) down the road whom he’s always loved, and the young drifter (Patrick Dempsey) who acts as the catalyst in their dormant lives.
