Sewage spilled from a flooded manhole and ran into Mission Bay for the third straight day Friday, causing county health officials to extend contamination warnings for the bay.

All areas of the bay east of Ingraham Street have been posted with signs cautioning boaters and swimmers to avoid contact with the water, said Department of Health Services spokeswoman Diana Lucero. Sampling will be done daily to determine when the water is safe again, she said.

Friday’s spill occurred at Mission Bay Drive and Rosewood Street at a manhole flooded with rainwater, Lucero said. An estimated 90,000 gallons of water and sewage flowed into nearby storm drains and into the bay, she said. Previous spills occurred at the same location Wednesday and Thursday because of heavy rain.

In a related matter, county health officials learned Friday that a major sewage pumping station in Tijuana has been flooded by the recent rain. Mexican authorities have begun diverting sewage from the station into San Diego’s metropolitan sewer system via an emergency hookup until the problem is corrected, Lucero said.

In another spill Friday, 300 gallons of sewage flowed into the water at Ocean Beach, a health department spokesman said. The overflow was caused by tree roots blocking a sewer main at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Point Loma Avenue, he said. The beach near the site of the spill has been posted with warning signs.
