Local News in Brief : Warning to Swimmers
Los Angeles County health officials Friday cautioned swimmers and beachgoers to avoid contact with water near drains that discharge storm runoff into the ocean.
“There is always a potential for contamination resulting from storm drain discharge,” said Dr. Caswell Evans, assistant director of the Department of Health Services.
There have been no reports of illness, he said, but after heavy rains such as those that hit this week, storm drain discharges may contain large amounts of coliform bacteria associated with animal feces.
