Remark by Mecham Sparks Investigation

PHOENIX — Arizona Atty. Gen. Bob Corbin on Friday launched an investigation of former Gov. Evan Mecham for urging supporters to “have a lapse of memory” about their association with him if they are questioned to be jurors for his criminal trial.
Corbin said the investigation would determine whether Mecham violated one of several laws, including the solicitation law that prohibits asking somebody to commit or help commit a crime.
Mecham acknowledged making the remark during an invitation-only Republican meeting Monday, but has said he was only joking.
The former governor is scheduled to go on trial May 19 on six felony charges of fraud, perjury and filing false documents for failing to report a $350,000 loan to his 1986 campaign. His brother and campaign treasurer, Willard Mecham, faces three similar counts.
