A Plea to Skiers to Follow the Rules

Share

Skiers, please, please have some consideration when you come into our small California coves. I know it is a very macho sport, but on top of the noise and exhaust pollution, I don’t think you realize how much you endanger swimmers when you crest back and forth in the surf line.

I have consulted the Harbor Patrol and the lifeguards in our area. Jet skis have engines. Therefore, they are considered boats that must be launched from official launching pads. And no jet or water skis are allowed in excess of 5 m.p.h. within 100 feet of swimmers and 200 feet of beach bathers, lifelines or boats at anchor loading and unloading passengers.

Some skiers constantly ignore these rules. Will it take a catastrophic accident to make skiers realize the danger of going full speed in one of our coves?

Skiers’ consideration will bring enormous comfort to those of us who watch you with anxious agony.
