Without any prior notice to homeowners, the Department of Water and Power workers trimmed the trees along their power lines and subsequently dropped all branches into the back yards along this route. I realize they have access to this right of way and I acknowledge that I use their services, but there seems to be a great degree of disregard on their part for the right to privacy and protection of a homeowner’s property. We had been watching a mother hummingbird raise her two chicks in a tree that was in the DWP’s path. Had we as homeowners received any advance notice that this trimming was going to occur, we could have in some way protected this nest from the falling branches, but of course no one thought to notify anyone. The branch was destroyed by the tree trimmers, and despite our efforts to relocate the baby birds, one did die.

This must seem a small event in the running of a large city like Los Angeles, but on a larger scale, it is this same attitude towards wildlife that has been so destructive to our environment. No one cares until it is too late.

Surely the DWP knows that homeowners have pets, plants and wildlife that they care about. A notification would not only seem like a courtesy, but a right granted to property owners.
