There has been an exchange of correspondence in Dear Abby recently that raised an interesting question; namely, why do baseball managers wear their team uniforms, which are not designed for the physiques of older men.

One letter writer asked, we thought quite tellingly, whether basketball fans would think it funny if Pat Riley paced the sidelines at a Lakers game wearing little short pants and a tank top. Nor do football coaches show up for work wearing shoulder pads and a helmet.

But not since Connie Mack managed--and owned--the Philadelphia Athletics has a manager worn mufti. Now the rules require uniforms in the dugout.

It’s a quirky and quaint custom, which baseball should think about putting aside. Wouldn’t some of those managers look better in a sport shirt and trousers than they do in that baseball suit?
