Voters in Guatemala’s smaller cities and municipal districts cast ballots for mayors and city councils in the country’s first elections since a civilian government assumed control of the Central American nation in January, 1986. Nearly 1.3 million people were registered to vote in the elections in 271 municipalities with populations under 20,000. President Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo’s centrist Christian Democrat Party holds 148 of the 271 mayoralties being contested.
