‘Moloka’i Solo/Carved in Silence’
U.S.A., 1987, 112 minutes , 5:30 p.m . An odd documentary portrait--ostensibly the story of Audrey Sutherland, a vigorous 65-year-old whose passion for kayaking is captured here. However, her words are provided in dreary voice-over by an actress and the film makers repeatedly focus on the spectacular Hawaiian scenery to the detriment of their subject. With “Carved in Silence”--a brief history of Angel Island, where Chinese immigrants were detained in the early 20th Century.
