Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) is expected to ask for a vote to subpoena thousands of pages of notes by Lt. Col. Oliver L. North to aid a probe of alleged drug trafficking by Contras or their supporters, an aide said. Kerry planned to ask the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to vote on the subpoenas during a business session today, a spokesman for Kerry said. Kerry is conducting an investigation of drug trafficking across the southern U.S. border and has turned up some testimony that at least peripherally links supply networks for the Nicaraguan rebels and related groups to the drug trade. On Monday, the Boston Globe reported there are indirect references to drug trafficking in about 500 pages of North’s notes already released.
