Local News in Brief : Protest Empties Classes

Share

Most of Arcadia High School’s 2,100 students refused to attend classes Tuesday in support of teachers involved in a salary dispute with school officials.

After rallying on the school’s front lawn at 8 a.m., most of the students gradually left the campus, while an estimated 400 attended classes. Many of the students said they intend to continue the protest until the school board reaches an agreement with teachers in the Arcadia Unified School District. Contract negotiations have been under way for 11 months.

Supt. Stephen A. Goldstone said students who do not have legitimate excuses for being absent may be considered truant. The district is suffering financially because absenteeism reduces the amount of money received from the state, he said.
