New Zealand’s Michael Fay has withdrawn his agreement with a British syndicate for a challengers’ sail-off in the America’s Cup this summer.

The proposed Blue Arrow Challenge boat, Fay said, is not what syndicate leader Peter de Savary had led him to believe. Instead of being similar to Fay’s 90-foot-waterline, keel-ballasted monohull, it is almost as different in concept as Sail America’s catamaran--also a sore point with Fay.

“We’ve long had an agreement with De Savary, (Australia’s Alan) Bond and anybody else who wants to come along to participate in a sail-off if they’re there in a 90-foot boat,” Fay said.

Meanwhile, Fay said he has instructed his lawyers to proceed as they see fit with action in the New York Supreme Court to bar Sail America from sailing a catamaran.
