College Roundup : UC Irvine Can’t Slow Streaking San Diego State, 11-4

UC Irvine’s baseball team was the latest victim to fall to San Diego State, which extended its winning streak to 18 games Tuesday, beating the Anteaters, 11-4, in San Diego.

Lance Pinnell drove in four runs for the Aztecs (37-13-1), and teammate Anthony Johnson went 3 for 5 with 1 RBI.

John Seeburger and Mike Goodcase had two hits each for Irvine (26-25-1). Anteaters Stacy Parker, Jay Hawthorne and Al Rodriguez had one RBI each.

In other nonconference baseball play:

Cal State Fullerton 10, Cal State Los Angeles 7--Fifth-ranked Fullerton (35-11) scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Titan Jim Osborn, who was 3 for 4, had an RBI in that rally and also had a 3-run home run in the second. Brent Mayne singled in the second to extend his hitting streak to 28 games. Pitcher Chris Robinson (2-0) picked up the win in relief. Cal State Los Angeles is 20-28.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Southern California College 1, Cal Baptist 0--In the first game, Robert Mansfield (4-3) threw a 2-hitter, striking out 11, for host Southern California College (18-23, 12-8). Carlos Salazar singled home the winning run with two out in the ninth. It was the only hit off losing pitcher Fred Whately (7-9).

In the second game, Eric Gasner hit a three-run homer to lead SCC.

In GSAC softball:

Cal Lutheran 5-2 Southern California College 2-1 (second game 8 innings)--In the first game, Dee Pilkington (9-5) threw a six-hitter, striking out three, for Cal Lutheran (24-11, 14-1) at SCC.

In the second game, Kelly Ingram drove in the winning run with one out in the eighth. Lisa Napier had five hits in the two games for SCC (14-25, 5-9).

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 5-4, UCSD 2-0--In the first game at Chapman, winning pitcher Cheri Schreck gave up two hits and Kirsten Lewis and Michelle Lyons each went 2 for 3 with one RBI.

In the second game, pitcher Shelly Mahon got the win, giving up three hits for Chapman (34-22).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, UC Santa Barbara 2--Mark Kaplan, ranked 23rd in the nation, defeated Jeff Greenwald, 6-4, 7-5, to lead host Irvine (21-6), which is ranked fifth in the nation. Kaplan is 17-12 for the season.

In Golden State Athletic Conference tennis:

Point Loma Nazarene College 9, Christ College 0--Christ College falls to 1-6 in conference play, 6-18 overall, at Point Loma (14-10, 6-2).
