SDSU Extends Streak to 18 With 11-4 Win

The San Diego State baseball team extended its winning streak to 18 games Tuesday by beating UC Irvine, 11-4, in a nonconference game in Anteater Stadium at Irvine.

Lance Pinnell was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, two runs scored and four runs batted in for SDSU (37-13-1), which is tied with the 1979 team for the school’s second-longest streak. The school record of 24 straight victories was set in 1983.

Anthony Johnson was 3 for 5 with an RBI. Jack Skoog (2-0), one of six SDSU pitchers, relieved starter Greg Page in the fourth inning and got the victory.

John Seeburger and Mike Goodcase both had two hits for UC Irvine (26-25-1).

Parris Sorianello hit a three-run home run in the third inning and drove in another run as the University of San Diego (24-28) had 20 hits to defeat NAIA opponent Master’s College, 15-3, at Cunningham Stadium.

It was Sorianello’s seventh home run. Sean Baron also hit his seventh home run with the bases empty in the fifth.

Master’s College (20-23) used six pitchers. Nine USD players had hits, led by Mark Trafton and Andy Roberts, who each had three.

Padre Manager Larry Bowa, who, with sportswriter Barry Bloom, has written a book about the 1987 Padre season entitled “Bleep,” will have his only scheduled signing party today at noon at the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Bookstore, 1255 5th Ave.

MEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

Mike Fabian of the University of San Francisco won the individual title and helped the Dons capture the team championship at the West Coast Athletic Conference tournament at Portland. Fabian had a 54-hole score of 2-over-par 218 on the West Delta golf course.

San Francisco scored 899 to win its fifth conference title in eight years. Defending champion Pepperdine was three shots back at 902. Host Portland was third at 908, followed by the University of San Diego and Loyola Marymount at 917.
