‘A Night in Havana’

U.S.A., 1987, 87 minutes, 10 p.m. Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie is as personally infectious as his music. But this flat, uninspired documentary by John Holland simply intercuts between Gillespie performing at the Havana Jazz Fest and talking to the camera about the African-Cuban roots of his music. A few glimpses of Havana serve as travelogue. Gillespie--and Cuba for that matter--deserve better.
