Repertory Theater’s Gala to Be Breakfast at Tiffany’s--Almost
OK, so it will be breakfast near Tiffany’s. Breakfast near the Tiffany’s that will open at South Coast Plaza in October.
No problem. For the women who have chaired South Coast Repertory Theatre’s galas in past years, the May 12 event couldn’t be any better if it were staged in Manhattan. Because , it will preview a gala that will start with a Big-Apple kind of polish: cocktails at Tiffany’s. Cocktails at Tiffany’s on Oct. 8, the night Tiffany’s stages the soiree that will celebrate SCR’s 25th anniversary season.
For dinner and dancing at the gala, a glorious tent will be erected in the parking area near Nordstrom. And there’s talk that Tiffany’s will create silver keepsakes for the occasion.
But, back to breakfast. The invitations are in the mail to the 30 committee members--including former gala chairwomen, who comprise the steering committee--who will stage the silver anniversary party. The breakfast will be continental--”a buffet presentation,” says Molly Lynch, SCR’s Annual Fund director. “Cafe seating in the mall.” Floral arrangements will be done up in Tiffany’s trademark-blue boxes.
Renee Segerstrom of Newport Beach will be honorary chairwoman of the gala. Past chairwomen have been Louise Ewing, Dot Clock, Jean Wenke and Barbara Bowie of Newport Beach; Pat Allen and Arden Flamson of Corona del Mar; Valley Reilly of Mission Viejo; Judy Threshie of Santa Ana, and Lydia Wang Himes of Laguna Beach.
Brian Ohl, president of retail operations for Tiffany’s in New York, plans to attend the breakfast.
Encore: If you think the luncheon that Renee and Henry Segerstrom staged Wednesday for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden marked the first time the Segerstroms had dined with the royal couple, think again. They’ve dined with the king and queen on several occasions, the first time in 1981 at Hotel Pierre in New York. “We met at the Swedish Ball there,” Renee said. “It was lovely.” Since Henry is a member of the Swedish Royal Roundtable--50 American and 50 Swedish businessmen--the Segerstroms will also see the couple in Washington in November, when the Roundtable has a meeting there.
Smorgasbord: Harold and Sandy Price’s arty Mediterranean home in Irvine Cove will be the scene of a chic little buffet Sunday for Gerald Arpino, new artistic director of the Joffrey Ballet. (Arpino co-founded the ballet company with its former artistic director, Robert Joffrey, who died on March 25.) The twilight party will also fete new Joffrey board members from Orange County: John and Kathleen Rhynerson, Antoinette Cullop and Claudia Roxburgh . . .
Restaurant Antoine at Le Meridien hotel in Newport Beach and Antonello of Santa Ana--along with L’Ermitage of Beverly Hills--received coveted Golden Scepter awards from the Southern California Restaurant Writers Assn. on April 17 during its awards banquet at the Disneyland Hotel . . .
Dr. John House, President Reagan’s otologist, was at the Four Seasons Hotel in Newport Beach on Wednesday to speak at a membership luncheon for the Orange County Chapter of the Associates of the House Ear Institute. House installed new remote-controlled hearing aids in Reagan’s ears in February. “He has moderate loss in one ear--resulting from a gun going off very near him when he was an actor--and mild loss in the other,” according to House, who said the purpose of the Los Angeles institute is to “prevent and correct hearing loss.” Athalie Clarke of Newport Beach founded the Los Angeles and Orange County chapters of the Associates. Among guests: Virginia Knott Bender, Maria Crutcher, Cleva Howard, Gloria Osbrink, Hyla Bertea, Anne Badham, Carol Wilken and Virginia Smallwood.
