College Tennis Championships Set for Georgia
The 1988 Volvo Tennis-Collegiate Championships is to be played Oct. 20-23 at the University of Georgia in Athens, collegiate tennis officials announced Thursday.
The tournament, played at UCLA since 1984, is the first national championship of the season and determines the preseason rankings for both men’s singles and doubles competition. It will feature a qualifying round and a main draw of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.
“We consider this a great honor to host a prestigious event,” Georgia tennis coach Dan Magill said. “We have been fortunate to host the NCAA’s over the years and are confident that the University of Georgia and the Volvo Tennis-Collegiate Series will make a great team.”
Past winners of the tournament include Scott Melville last year, Richey Reneberg in 1986 and Mikael Pernfors in 1984.
The 1988 NCAA championships also will be played in Athens.
