Davidson Assaults Record Book as Redondo Beats Cerritos, 6-0

St. Bernard 12, Mary Star 0--Dan Melendez went 4 for 4, including his 12th home run of the season, and pitched a shutout to lead the host Vikings to their ninth straight Camino Real League win.

Melendez’s solo shot in the sixth inning was one of three home runs for St. Bernard (9-0 in league, 15-3 overall). Eric Strand hit a solo homer in the third and Placido Estevez a three-run blast in the fifth. Eric Douglas added to the Vikings’ 16-hit attack by going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Melendez, who finished with three RBIs, gave up six hits to raise his record to 5-1. The left-hander struck out five and walked none.

The loss completed a rough week for Mary Star (4-5, 10-9), which suffered a 12-0 setback to Serra on Wednesday.

Gahr 11, Leuzinger 6--Cain Gamez had three hits and three RBIs to help the Gladiators (16-4-2) move into the finals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament with a win at Redondo.

Losing pitcher Brian Franklin gave up 11 hits as Leuzinger lost for the third time this week and dropped to 10-12.

West Torrance 7, Alemany 3--Ted Holloway drove in three runs and Marty Kehoe struck out five in six innings as the Warriors (14-5) advanced to the consolation finals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament with a win at home.

Denny Hocking contributed three hits and two RBIs for West. Steve Allyn’s two-run double sparked a three-run second inning, when the Warriors took the lead for good.

North Torrance 15, Gardena 2--Brian Dessert highlighted a 19-hit onslaught with a three-run homer in the fourth inning, as the Saxons (14-8) cruised to a win in the ninth-place consolation quarterfinals of the Redondo/Palos Verdes Tournament at Gardena.

Dessert, the winning pitcher, and Jim Henderson were each 3 for 3. David Bewley drove in three runs and Brian Marzorini had two RBIs.

Gardena fell to 6-10.
