Golf Roundup : Norman and Strange Share Lead in Texas After Long Day

Greg Norman and Curtis Strange, each forced to play 36 holes Saturday because of a rain delay, completed three rounds of the $700,000 Independent Insurance Agent Open at The Woodlands, Tex., tied for the lead at 13-under par 203.

Norman, who shared the lead with Ray Floyd through two rounds, shot a 4-under par 68 in the third round, and Strange fired a 6-under 66. Floyd shot a 76 in the third round to drop to 211.

Tom Kite, who sank 6 birdies for a 66, was a stroke back of the co-leaders at 204. Brian Tennyson was three shots off the lead.

Seven golfers either shared or were in sole possession of first place during the third round.

Arnold Palmer and Miller Barber combined on a 9-under-par 61 to move into a share of the lead with two other teams entering the final round of the Legends of Golf at Austin, Tex.

The teams of Bob Charles and Bruce Devlin (66), and Peter Thomson-Harold Henning (62) also had part of the lead at 19 under par 191 for 54 holes.

Three other teams are at 192--Bobby Nichols-Butch Baird, Tommy Aaron-Lou Graham and defending champions Bruce Crampton-Orville Moody, who also shot a 61.

Deb Richard shot a 6-under-par 66 to tie Rosie Jones and Sherri Steinhauer for the lead after two rounds in the $335,000 Sara Lee tournament at Nashville, Tenn.

Jones shot a 68 for a 2-round total of 7-under 135, and Steinhauer followed her opening-round 66 with a 71.

First-round leader Amy Alcott was among 6 players at 139. Alcott followed her opening 65 with a 74 that included a 4-putt green on the final hole for a double bogey.
