Bradley Upset With Water-Saving Efforts

Less than a week after signing a sweeping water conservation ordinance, Mayor Tom Bradley has indicated his dissatisfaction with the way portions of the program are being carried out by the Department of Water and Power.

In an April 27 letter to Rick Caruso, president of the Board of Water and Power Commissioners, Bradley said he was disappointed to learn that a key piece of equipment--cutoff valves for low-flow shower heads--may not be included in water conservation kits being distributed to residents. The valve allows a showerer to soap up without wasting water, while retaining the temperature setting.

Bradley asked Caruso to order the DWP staff to add the cutoff valves to the kits. The mayor said he realizes this step may delay issuing the kits, but added that “we should be providing DWP customers with every opportunity to conserve water.”

The new ordinance is intended to cut water use by 10% in a year in which the southern Sierra received only 25% of its normal snow pack.
