United Brands Co.’s profit rose 35% in the first quarter to $18.1 million; revenue also increased, to $849 million from $776 millionin the year-ago quarter. The Cincinnati-based food and food processing company attributed the improvement in operating results to substantially higher profits in its Chiquita fresh fruit operations.
