Sewage spilled into San Diego Bay in Point Loma Monday after grease and roots blocked a sewer line, causing it to overflow through a manhole, the health department reported.
About 1 p.m., more than 600 gallons of sewage flowed out of the manhole at the 300 block of San Elijo Street. The sewage ran into a nearby storm drain, which empties into San Diego Bay near Kellogg Street and San Antonio Avenue.
The sewage spread over 300 yards in an area known as Kellogg Beach until it was stopped at 3:30 p.m. Warnings of contamination have been posted in the area for would-be bathers. The water will be tested daily to determine when it will be safe, health officials said.
