Local News in Brief : Andean Condor Hatched

Efforts to save the threatened California condor got another boost when an Andean condor was hatched in an incubator at the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park.

Officials hope to hatch up to 16 condors of the related South American species as part of their research into saving the endangered California variety.

Researchers plan to release some of the Andean condors in the Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County this summer as a dry run for the eventual re-introduction of the native California condor.

The Andean condor egg, which hatched Monday, was a gift from the Miami Metrozoo. Other eggs yet to hatch have been donated by the Dallas and San Antonio zoos, which have breeding pairs of Andean condors. Earlier this year, two Andean condors were hatched at the San Diego Wild Animal Park as part of the same program.

There are only 25 California condors, all of which are in captive breeding programs. One was born last week at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
