A Northern California man who attempted to ride a small inflatable raft from south Florida to the Bahamas was rescued, emaciated and severely sunburned, after a 20-day ocean odyssey. “I’ll be staying on land for a while,” a weary Kenneth Maffei of Santa Cruz said from his bed in a New Jersey hospital. He was in stable condition two days after an oil tanker picked him up off Cape Hatteras, N.C., 650 miles from his starting point of Ft. Lauderdale, and almost the same distance from his original destination. “Sometimes, going through life, you take risks,” Maffei said after the ordeal. “You’ve got to take chances, otherwise you can’t reach your dreams.”
