One streak continued and another ended in Cal State Fullerton’s 4-3 baseball victory over UCLA Wednesday night at Titan Field.

Brent Mayne, who had an RBI double in the sixth inning, extended his hitting streak to 32 games and helped Fullerton snap a three-game losing streak.

Fullerton (36-14) was swept by Fresno State in a three-game series last weekend, the first time this season the Titans had lost more than two games in a row. For five innings Wednesday, it looked as if UCLA might hand the Titans their fourth consecutive loss.

The Bruins (28-24) scored two runs in the first inning and held a 2-1 lead going into the sixth. Mayne’s double scored Rex Peters, who led off the sixth with a walk, from first to make it 2-2.

Mike Ross followed with a single just out of the reach of Bruin shortstop Mike Hankins, scoring Mayne for a 3-2 Titan lead.

“The last five games, I’ve been maybe a little anxious,” Mayne said. “I haven’t been seeing the ball that well. I’ve been lucky the past five games. I’ve been squibbing them through. Hopefully, I’m through with this little slump. I know that sounds funny.”

There was no luck involved with his double, though. It was a solid shot that wound up in the right-field corner.

In the seventh, the Titans added an insurance run when Peters doubled home Bobby Jones for a 4-2 lead.

UCLA’s Bobby Holley scored on a groundout by John Dolak in the eighth to cut it to 4-3.

Freshman Huck Flener (4-1) went solid seven innings, picking up the win for the Titans. Flener struck out seven, gave up eight hits and, except for a shaky first inning, handled the Bruins until the eighth, when, after Holley’s leadoff double, he was replaced by Danny DeVille.
