Manager Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds, suspended 30 days for shoving umpire Dave Pallone last Saturday, said the suspension could have been worse.

“It could have been 30 days without pay,” Rose said.

Rose is due in New York Friday to make an appeal before National League President Bart Giamatti, who suspended Rose and fined him $10,000.

According to Rose, Giamatti ordered him to stay out of the dugout and to refrain from trying to operate the Reds from the stadium in any way. While his appeal is pending, however, Rose will be allowed to manage as usual.
