Roger Reid, an assistant basketball coach at Brigham Young University, turned down an offer by new UCLA Coach Jim Harrick to be an assistant.

Reid, 40, said Thursday that he spent several weeks thinking about whether to move to UCLA, but after meetings with BYU Athletic Director Glen Tuckett, President Jeffrey Holland and other school officials, Reid decided to remain at BYU.

“Yesterday, I was going to UCLA,” Reid said. “But after visiting with the (BYU) administration, I feel it’s in the best interest for Roger Reid and my family to stay at BYU.”

Reid wouldn’t discuss whether he was given assurances that he will be the head coach when Ladell Andersen retires in four years but did say: “I just think I’m going to be the next coach at BYU. There is no question in my mind that I will be the next basketball coach at BYU.”

Harrick reportedly offered Reid a five-figure salary raise.
