PREP BASEBALL : Roundup : Irvine Wins in 8, Takes One-Game Lead Over El Toro

Anthony Hernandez’s infield single with one out in the eighth inning scored George Koutures as Irvine High School defeated El Toro, 3-2, Friday in a South Coast League baseball game at El Toro.

The victory gives first-place Irvine (16-7, 9-4) a one-game lead over El Toro (13-11, 8-5) with two games remaining in the regular season.

John Breatza went the distance for the victory. Breatza struck out 6 and walked 3. El Toro’s Jeff Stark also went the distance, striking out 6.

El Toro took a 1-0 lead in the first when David Nemeth singled home Brian McNamara.

Scott Volmer’s two-run single in the third gave Irvine a 2-1 lead. El Toro tied the score in the sixth on a two-out double by Bo Haly.

In other South Coast League games:

San Clemente 2, Capistrano Valley 0--Ken Dolan, a freshman right-hander, threw a one-hitter for host San Clemente (8-13, 4-9). Dolan (2-1) allowed a bloop double to Brian Walker in the second. Dolan also struck out 4, walked 1 and hit a batter. Mark Broccardo singled and Rick Brail followed with his third home run of the season in the second for San Clemente.

Mission Viejo 4, Dana Hills 0--Chris Boger (5-3) threw a 4-hitter with 5 strikeouts for host Mission Viejo (16-6, 7-6). Scott Parrott hit a 3-run home run in the third for Mission Viejo.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 9, Katella 0--Kevin Schula threw a 1-hitter, striking out 5, for host El Dorado (20-3, 11-2). Chris Facione had 2 hits, including a triple, and scored 2 runs for El Dorado. Phil Nevin had 3 RBIs.

Esperanza 7, Los Alamitos 3--Doug Saunders had 3 hits and 3 RBIs and Jason Moler had 2 hits and 2 RBIs for visiting Esperanza (16-6, 10-3). Mike Kelly had 2 hits, including a home run, for Los Alamitos (18-6, 9-4).

Loara 6, Cypress 5--Craig Clayton had 3 hits and 2 RBIs for host Loara (9-12,3-4). Joey Pactwa hit a two-run home run in the first and Eric Smith (1-1) went the distance for the victory.

In the Orange League:

Western 4, Brea-Olinda 3 (8 innings)--Bobby Noson threw a 2-hitter and Manny Rodriguez singled in the winning run in the eighth for visiting Western (15-8-1, 9-3-1). Troy Babbitt had a solo home run in the fifth for Western. Aaron Charlton had a two-run double in the fifth for Brea-Olinda (4-18-1, 2-10-1).

Valencia 9, Anaheim 3--Sammy Lopez had 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Mike Edwards and Randy Rosjelly each had 2 hits and an RBI for visiting Valencia (13-6-1, 9-3-1).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 11, Newport Harbor 1--Chad Thompson had 2 hits, including a grand slam, for host Corona del Mar (7-11, 5-8). Thompson’s grand slam was part of a 10-run first inning for the Sea Kings. Rich Mather (2-2) pitched five innings for the victory.

Saddleback 6, Estancia 3--Leo Carter drove in 2 runs and George Saldana drove in 1 to lead host Saddleback (18-5, 12-1). Sean Therian (6-3) allowed 7 hits and struck out 3 for the victory.

Tustin 4, University 2--Monte Jones (8-5) threw a 5-hitter, striking out 8, to lead host Tustin (14-9, 8-5).

In the Sunset League:

Westminster 3, Marina 1--Ryan Klesko had 7 strikeouts in 3 innings of relief and had 2 hits and 2 RBIs to lead host Westminster (15-9, 8-5) into first place. Brett Grebe (4-5) pitched the first four innings for the victory.

Ocean View 7, Huntington Beach 6--Ocean View (13-9-1, 7-5-1) led, 7-0, in the sixth, but Huntington Beach rallied for 6 runs on 5 consecutive walks and a grand slam by Chance Agnew.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 19, Southern California Christian 3--Orange Lutheran (18-7, 8-3) outhit host SCC, 20-4. Ken Hughie was 4 for 4 with 4 singles and 4 RBIs.
