The 41st Cannes Film Festival--that annual melange of movies and mammaries--opens today in the French Riviera resort with a French film about dolphins and competitive deep-sea diving, “The Big Blue.” Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford will be on hand with their latest directorial efforts, “Bird” (about the late jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker) and “The Milagro Beanfield War,” respectively. Twenty-one films will compete for the coveted Golden Palm awards. Five more works (including “Beanfield”) are being honored as official selections. The United States and Britain have three films each in competition, while France, West Germany and Spain will be represented by two films each. Argentina, China, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Japan and a New Zealand-Australia co-production complete the list of international entries.
