Rift at Gang Wake Results in Fatal Shots

A wake for a gang member who died of natural causes turned violent Wednesday afternoon when arguing mourners spilled into the street, where at least one of them opened fire with an automatic weapon, killing one man and wounding another, Los Angeles police said.

A 31-year-old man whose name was not released died in the spray of gunfire--from an AK-47 and perhaps a handgun as well, said Detective Lt. O.L. Johnson.

Ray Kelly, 31, was hospitalized in serious condition with a gunshot wound in one leg.

Johnson characterized the shooting as an intra-gang incident, not a dispute between two gangs.

As many as three dozen people--from infants to adults--were inside a home on 112th Street after the funeral of an acquaintance when two young women began quarreling, police said.

When two men joined the argument, the mourners moved into the street, said Johnson, where the shooting began.
