A motorcyclist who tried to outrun the California Highway Patrol at speeds up to 90 m.p.h. was killed and his passenger critically injured when he slammed into a car in Pico Rivera Thursday, authorities said.

Morning rush-hour traffic forced the motorcyclist and the pursuing officer to make frequent stops during the chase through city streets, Officer Ernie Garcia said.

The motorcyclist, Dimirtri Lona, 18, of Whittier, finally slammed into a car at an intersection about 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, Garcia said.
