Robert Godinez, president of the Iron Worker’s Local 627 union, said Thursday a 22-ton propeller shaft plunged down onto nine workers Wednesday because a 6-ton pneumatic hoist that had not been inspected broke apart at San Diego’s National Steel & Shipbuilding Co. yard. Three men are still hospitalized. In July, six workers were killed and six hurt at the yard when a steel personnel basket fell 30 feet from a crane to the deck of a Navy ship.
