Golf Roundup : Wiebe Leads After a 64
Mark Wiebe, a runner-up two years ago, shot a six-under-par 64 Thursday to take the first-round lead in the $750,000 Byron Nelson golf tournament at Irving, Tex.
Wiebe, playing in the afternoon when the greens were at their fastest, held a one-shot edge over Brandel Chamblee, a former University of Texas star who has yet to win on the PGA Tour.
Chamblee, playing in the last group of the day on the Tournament Players Course at Las Colinas, birdied No. 18.
Payne Stewart, who has lost three playoffs but has never won a tournament in Texas, was one of 12 players tied at 66.
Mark James and Richard Boxall of Britain shot seven-under-par 63s to share the first-round lead in the $330,000 Spanish Open at Santander, Spain. Favorite Seve Ballesteros struggled to a 72 on the course where he learned to play.
