A 15-foot great white shark was captured in San Pedro Bay by a commercial fishing boat two days after sighting of a shark off Newport Beach forced evacuation of 2,000 swimmers. The 1,500-pound shark was netted by a commercial fishing vessel in the waters off Terminal Island, according to Frank Ibarra, an employee at Los Angeles Harbor Sportfishing. There was no evidence that the shark was the same one that forced closure of more than five miles of beach Thursday after the Newport Beach sighting. Officials said great whites are seldom sighted in the Orange County area because the sharks prefer colder water.
