Local News in Brief : John Marshall Cited as ‘Exemplary School’

Share

John Marshall Elementary School was one of 287 elementaries nationwide named “exemplary schools” by the U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday.

The crowded south Glendale school, where 40% of the students speak a primary language other than English, received the award based on student test scores, educational programs, leadership, climate and community relations.

In September, representatives from winning schools will be honored in a White House ceremony. Four other Los Angeles County schools also will receive the award.

The non-monetary awards, given to elementary and secondary schools in alternate years, were initiated in 1982 as a way to motivate educators, Department of Education spokeswoman Bertha Nelson said.
