Share

The ABC Unified School District has applied for about $188,000 in federal funds as reimbursement for students who were illegal immigrants who applied for amnesty.

The federal Immigration Reform and Control Act allows school districts with at least 500 or 3% of its students who were illegal to apply for reimbursement. A provision of the amnesty program, which allowed illegal immigrants to apply to become legal residents, permitted districts to provide records that the students had been attending school since 1982.

The money will be used to help pay for special programs for immigrant students, including English as a second language.
