Bob Boone scored on a record-tying ninth double play in the 10th inning Thursday as the Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Angels made five double plays and the Orioles four, matching the mark for two teams in a game. It had been accomplished nine times, the last by Kansas City and Oakland on May 14, 1971.

Boone started the 10th inning with a single off Dave Schmidt (1-2). Boone moved to third on Brian Downing’s single and scored when pinch-hitter Chili Davis grounded into a double play.

Schmidt took over after Mike Boddicker allowed nine hits in nine innings.

Bryan Harvey (2-1) got the victory with two innings of relief. Angel starter Kirk McCaskill gave up eight singles in eight innings.

Baltimore grounded into double plays in the first four innings and another in the seventh.

Wally Joyner hit a two-out double in the first inning and scored on Johnny Ray’s single. Joyner had three hits.

Mickey Tettleton’s single drove home Eddie Murray in the sixth to tie it, 1-1. Murray hadsingled with one out, took third on Jim Dwyer’s two-out base hit and scored on Tettleton’s third straight hit.

The Orioles continued their lack of support for Boddicker, who began the day with a club-record 13-game losing streak since Sept. 4. Baltimore has scored just 21 runs in his last 14 starts.
