NCAA Division II Tennis Championships : Chapman’s Walker Wins Two Matches
Top-seeded Miles Walker of Chapman College won his first two matches Thursday in the individual singles competition at the NCAA Division II national tennis championships at Sonoma State University.
Walker defeated Rob Littlefield of Southwest Baptist, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round and beat Hampton’s Pedro Alipio, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round. Walker, a senior, is 41-10 this season and broke his own school record for victories, set last year, when he was 40-8. He will face Scott Smith of Michigan’s Ferris State in a third-round match Friday.
Chapman’s Olivier Amerlinck, seeded second, was upset in the first round, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, by Lance Milner of Pennsylvania’s Bloomsburg University.
In other first-day singles competition, Chapman’s Allen Juinio topped Gary Jones of Missouri’s Southwest Baptist, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round, but lost to Manoj Kashyap of Cal State Hayward, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round.
In the first round of doubles, Walker and Amerlinck, the top-seeded team, defeated Mike Borer and Brett Christoferson of Minnesota’s Mankato State, 6-2, 6-4. Chapman’s Barry Hancock and Paul Charlesworth topped Mike Auger and Bart Allen of Florida’s Eckerd College, 7-6, 7-6. Juinio and Dave Seline lost to Smith and Karl Johnson of Ferris State, 6-2, 6-2.
