Whitson Guilty of Drunk Driving

Padre pitcher Ed Whitson pleaded guilty Wednesday to drunk driving in connection with an April 10 arrest in Solana Beach, Deputy Dist. Atty. Steve Carroll said.

Whitson entered his plea in Vista Municipal Court in front of Municipal Court Judge Victor Ramirez. Whitson was fined $740, was ordered to spend two days in a work-release program and attend an alcohol education school and was placed on three years of unsupervised probation. He also must submit to chemical testing at any time if required by an officer.

Carroll said the sentence was standard for a first alcohol-related offense.

Whitson was stopped by a San Diego County sheriff’s deputy on Lomas Santa Fe Drive after the officer observed Whitson driving a car at 65-70 m.p.h. in a 35-m.p.h. zone. A subsequent blood-alcohol test showed that Whitson had a level of .20, twice the reading under which California law considers a person intoxicated.
