Local News in Brief : Truck Driver Charged

A truck driver accused of deliberately ramming his tractor-trailer rig into 21 cars during a Los Angeles freeway rampage was charged Friday with 30 felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Also Friday, Municipal Judge Glenette Blackwell raised bail for the driver, Charley Tom Lee Jr., to $1 million. He had been in custody on $12,000 bail.

Lee, 25, of Haltom City, Tex., was also charged with one count each of vandalism and possession of amphetamines, both felonies, and with possessing a loaded gun and a hypodermic needle, both misdemeanors, Deputy Dist. Atty. Ed Kosmal said.

Lee is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Municipal Court.

He is charged with deliberately ramming 21 vehicles carrying 26 people during a high-speed rampage Wednesday on freeways between Pomona and Hollywood.

Four additional assault counts were filed in case any more victims come forward, Kosmal said.
