Stove Blast Starts Fire, Destroys Powerboat
From United Press International
A 32-foot powerboat was destroyed by flames when an alcohol stove exploded Saturday as the boat’s owner tried to boil a pot of coffee, authorities said.
Christopher Maneff dove into the water and escaped injury when the fire raged through the boat about a mile off Santa Monica Pier, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Lee Wagner.
Maneff told deputies that a small alcohol stove exploded about 1:30 p.m. Maneff grabbed a fire extinguisher, but failed to snuff out the flames.
