Travel to Peru--A Caution

Share

According to the United States Department of State, U.S. citizens are advised that terrorism is a serious problem in many parts of Peru, and visitors must exercise caution. However, popular tourist sites such as Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Iquitos are outside the most seriously affected areas. While jungle tourist sites such as Iquitos remain largely unaffected by terrorism or narcotics-related violence, tourists traveling through the jungle alone or in small groups may be at risk. Before visiting Peru, U.S. citizens are urged to call the Citizens Emergency Center at the State Dept.--(202) 647-5225--for the latest travel information. Phone hours are 8:15 a.m. to 10 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Visitors should register with the consular section of the American Embassy at 346 Grimaldo Del Solar, Miraflores, Lima, phone 44-36-21 or 44-39-21.
