A confrontation between members of rival street gangs on a sidewalk in Southwest Los Angeles ended Sunday with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man, authorities said.

Theron Shakir of Los Angeles was standing in front of an apartment house on West 90th Street near Vermont Avenue in unincorporated territory when two members of a rival gang walked up and gang slogans and insults were exchanged, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

One of the men opened fire several times, leaving Shakir dying on the sidewalk, then both men ran off, deputies said. Shakir was dead on arrival at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.
