A Los Angeles police officer shot and wounded a naked man who advanced on police while brandishing what appeared to be a gun but turned out to be an automotive timing light, police said. The man, Nelson Nunez, 29, was hospitalized at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center after the incident with a wound to his wrist, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police responding to a call of a mentally ill person creating a disturbance confronted Nunez about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of West 68th Street, Detective Steve Watkins said. Nunez, who pointed the light at officers and ignored commands to halt and drop the object, was wounded by one of four shots fired by Officer Charles Choe, Watkins said. The department’s Officer-Involved Shooting Team was investigating the incident. Nunez was not arrested.
