The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, along with the Commerce Department, announced that General Dynamics Corp. has been hired to be responsible for designing, building and launching the rockets that will put three weather satellites in orbit at a cost of $200 million. The satellites are built by Ford Aerospace. The contract is the first U.S. government procurement of commercial launch transportation services, NASA said. The first launch is scheduled for March, 1990, from Cape Canaveral, Fla.
