A 19-year-old driver of a pickup that hit another car, killing a Buena Park High School teen-ager returning from a prom and injuring her date, was legally drunk at the time of the crash, Anaheim police said Tuesday.

Gary Gray of Norco, who died in the early-morning crash on May 15, had a blood alcohol level of .13, according to the Orange County coroner’s office, an Anaheim police spokesman said. Under state law, a person with a blood alcohol level of .10 or higher is considered legally drunk.

Gray was driving a pickup that ran a red light at Ball Road and Western Avenue and slammed into a car carrying Mary Young Park, 18, of Buena Park, police said.

Park was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. She had attended Western High School’s prom that night with Gregory E. Wells, 18, of Anaheim, who was driving her to a friend’s house.

Wells, who received numerous cuts and bruises, has since been released from UCI Medical Center in Orange.

Gray’s passenger, Frank Iovine, 18, has refused to cooperate with police, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
