Local News in Brief : Brea : Sobriety Checkpoint at Carbon Canyon Road
Police, hoping to reduce the number of accidents on a dangerous stretch of highway, announced Wednesday that a sobriety checkpoint will be set up Friday night on Carbon Canyon Road.
Brea Police Chief Donald Forkus said motorists traveling east on the road, a main artery linking Orange and San Bernardino counties, would be stopped between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday. The checkpoint will be set up at the entrance to Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
Forkus said the city “has recognized the significant driving-under-the-influence problem on Carbon Canyon Road for some period of time.”
In 1987, the chief said, 13% of all collisions on the road were caused by intoxicated drivers. Four people were injured, and one died as a result of those collisions, he said.
“As a part of the Police Department’s commitment to (remove drunken) drivers from the road, regular sobriety checkpoints are maintained,” he added.
Forkus said the advance notification was being given in light of a recent state Supreme Court decision in which the court said police agencies should advise the public when and where sobriety checkpoints would be established.
