Library Bond Issue on Ballot

City residents will decide whether Santa Monica’s Main Library should receive a $4-million bond to purchase land for expansion of the library.

The City Council voted Tuesday to place the measure on the November ballot.

The land, which is next to the library, would be used for the expansion of the library’s services and materials collections. A study made by library space planner Robert Rohlf in 1986 recommended that the Main Library be enlarged before the year 2000.

Mary Lou Harbison, chair of the library board, said that recent remodeling at the library after asbestos was discovered created no additional space, and the facility is overcrowded.

“This bond is required in order to ensure the future of the library,” Harbison said.
