MEMORIAL DAY CLOSINGS AND EVENTS

MAIL: Post offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery Monday.

SCHOOLS: All Orange County public schools will be closed Monday.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES: All city, county, state and federal offices will be closed Monday.

BANKS: Monday is a banking holiday.

Local veterans groups will hold a number of ceremonies Monday in Orange County to commemorate Memorial Day.

The American Veterans Memorial Assn. will sponsor its 50th annual observance at 10 a.m. at Loma Vista Memorial Park, 701 Bastanchury Road, Fullerton. Sybil Bailey Stockdale, founder of the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia and wife of a former prisoner of war, will be one of the speakers. Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder will address an 11 a.m. ceremony at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 4471 Lincoln Ave., Cypress. Other participants will include Cypress Mayor Margaret Arnold and local veterans groups.

Westminster Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd., Westminster, will be the site of an 11 a.m. observance to be addressed by Brig. Gen. D. V. Schuter, commanding officer of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, and Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez.

AMVETS District II’s annual program will honor women veterans. The 10 a.m. event will be held at 10 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana. Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove) and Supervisor Roger R. Stanton will speak.

Several Orange County veterans organizations will sponsor a service at 11 a.m. at the Harbor Lawn/Mount Olive Mortuary and Cemetery, 1625 Gisler Ave., Costa Mesa. Speakers will include Brig. Gen. Stephen M. Wyman of the 175th Medical Brigade, California National Guard, and Lt. Col. Henry E. Front, chaplain of the California Military Reserve.

American Legion Post 291 will sponsor its 30th annual ceremony at 10 a.m. at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View Drive, Newport Beach. William (Art) Bloomer, retired Marine general, will deliver the keynote address. Guests will include Newport Beach City Councilwoman Evelyn R. Hart, Costa Mesa Mayor Donn Hall and Walter Ehlers, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

A 10:30 a.m. service at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach will be sponsored by American Legion Post 222 and VFW Post 5868. The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute by a team from the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. The Laguna Beach High School band will perform. About 50 churches, clubs and other organizations will participate.

The Orange County Friends of Nicaraguan Children will sponsor a number of activities honoring the Veterans Peace Convoy to Nicaragua, a journey by some veterans along four national routes to collect aid for Nicaragua. On Sunday, participating veterans will speak on “The Meaning of Memorial Day” at 10:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Church of Orange County, 1120 W. Santa Ana St., Anaheim. On Monday, a ceremony and news conference will be held at Irvine City Hall, 17200 Jamboree Road, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Speakers will include Mayor Larry Agran and Gerry Condon, national coordinator of the convoy.
