Local News in Brief : Search Goes On for Hiker
- Share via
Sheriff’s deputies on Santa Catalina Island sent out ground crews and a helicopter Friday in search of a hiker missing since Tuesday in the rugged country southeast of Avalon.
The missing hiker was believed to be Mike Ambrose, a tour guide recently hired by the Santa Catalina Island Co., said Deputy Jim Henry, search-and-rescue coordinator. The company operates tours and attractions on the island.
Ambrose was last seen Tuesday afternoon leaving a company tour bus after a fellow employee dropped him off at the Bird Park Campground on the outskirts of Avalon near the Wrigley Memorial, Henry said. Ambrose, who had a one-day pack of provisions, told the bus driver he was headed toward the island’s east end to go rock climbing, Henry said.
Two three-man search teams and the helicopter crew were looking for the missing hiker in an area six miles wide and 10 miles long, along the island’s rocky eastern coastline.
